For the second time in seven days, MCD's flood control system is preventing floods in cities along the Great Miami River. Maybe it's all the talk about the number two and palindromes that led to this second high-water event -- which began yesterday February 22, about 24 hours after the previous one ended. The Miami Valley received 0.75 to 2 inches of rainfall over the past 48 hours. All five MCD flood protection dams are storing water at this time. River levels reached or exceeded the first action stage at Dayton, West Carrollton, Moraine, Miamisburg, Franklin, Middletown, and Hamilton. Floodgate closures took place in Hamilton and Middletown yesterday. River levels have reached their peak and begun to fall at Germantown, Lockington, and Huffman dams. The pools upstream of Englewood and Taylorsville dams have not yet done so. Great Miami River levels at Piqua, Troy, and Hamilton have stopped rising, but elsewhere Great Miami River levels are still going up. Forecasted river levels are not as high as they were during the February 17 – 21 high water event.
