Work begins today on Dayton floodwall repairs
Work is scheduled to begin Monday, Aug. 14, on the Monument Floodwall Replacement
project in Dayton. The work is actually three jobs in one.
The contractor will:
- Replace 62 feet of the 18-foot-tall Monument stone floodwall with a
reinforced concrete floodwall. The work will be done along the left bank,
downstream of the Monument Avenue Bridge. This is the main part of
the project. It is needed because the wall section is bowing and
deteriorating. - Repair or replace sections of the concrete retaining wall and concrete
revetment along right bank the Great Miami River downstream of the
Monument Bridge. - Repair stone revetment along the right bank under the First/Salem
Bridge.
Work begins along the right bank Monday and on the left bank on Aug. 28.
MCD plans to salvage the existing stone from the Monument floodwall that
dates back to the 1880s.
“We have some possible uses in mind, including having our special
maintenance crew place a decorative stone cap on the top of the new reinforced
concrete wall,” says MCD Engineer Nick Mueller.” The rest will be
stockpiled.”
